" The Yellow Wallpaper” is a short story that was written by American creator Charlotte Perkins Gilman and was printed in 1892. The story is narrated through the journal articles of a female who is confined to her room in order to cure her " slight hysterical tendency. ” Although this treatment was well intended by her physician hubby, due to her isolation and lack of mental stimulation the woman's mental state progressively deteriorates before the end of the story once she goes completely ridiculous. In order to better understand this history it is useful to analyze that through the improved lenses of the several schools of literary criticism which include, formalist, biographical, historic, reader-response, deconstructionist, psychological, and gender criticisms.
From a formalist perspective, one of the most important matters to note concerning this short story is just how it is constructed from the items in the narrator's secret log, which the girl keeps concealed from her husband. The effect of this diary-like construction makes the story seem to be almost autobiographical even though the narrator is a imaginary character. Because of this, everything is relayed in a really personal method and gives a detailed view with the narrator and her thoughts. The reader gets very little information regarding other personas and there is an intense focus on the narrator plus the inner operation of her mind because her state of mind steadily declines.
While formalists argue that there is one authentic meaning that can be derived from the formal features of the text, deconstructionists argue that as time passes, the meanings of words modify and thus this is of the text message also improvements.
