Native American Mascots and Sports activities

In his book The Definitely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, creator Sherman Alexie introduces his readers to the issue of Indians used as mascots in sports. It is an issue that has affected sports for decades and Alexie brings up the subject throughout his book and interviews. This individual brings the topic to mild to open the reader's sight to the idea that Native Americans continue to be thought because historical but not culturally highly relevant to society. A large number of sports teams across the country have got nicknames that either infer or immediately use the Local American tradition. These nicknames are used as early as T-Ball and cover nearly every sport in america. This issue has been in the news a lot recently as I am an avid fan of the The atlanta area Braves and Chicago Blackhawks, it is one I follow very closely. Alexie brings this idea up several times through his book. In the book Junior attends Reardan, a mostly white colored school together with the nickname of " A warrior. ” The logo for the team is a significant red head with a down sticking out from the back of it is head. Seeing that he is the simply Native American at the college he remarks he was " the only different Indian around. (56)” Alexie is a huge opposition of applying Native American imagery or perhaps names in sports because it affects these people in ways various other races aren't even picture. The Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball make use of a logo much like Reardan's depiction of an Of india in battle paint and call it " Chief Wahoo. ” In an interview with Bill Moyers, Alexie compares that graphic to a photo of " Sambo” from your Disney toon in the 1930's.
